The desire to help birds survive the hard winter months, of course, is respect-worthy. The birds will reward you for the effort: in the winter – the bright plumage and cheerful singing, and in the summer helping to fight against insects. You can buy a wooden bird feeder in our shop, but besides this, it is also material to set it up properly and choose the right food.
The appearance of the bird feeder and its attractiveness to birds
The bird's view of architecture is, of course, different from ours. To make a "dining room" comfortable for the birds, you need to look at the design from the perspective of the birds themselves.
The type of a feeder
The most common type of bird feeders is a horizontal area with a shed. The area is filled with food, and the shed protects it from rain and wet wind. It is desirable to provide upturn sides so that the seeds would not spill over the edge of the platform, and two side walls so that the wind would not blow the food.
It is also commonly found another type – a frame with the pin, on which fat, grain "bagels", apple slices and other treats for birds are strung.
Size
Depending on the size of the birds you plan to feed, you need to match the dimensions of their house. If you have installed a large wooden bird feeder, it is likely that its main "clients" will be pigeons, magpies, and crows. They will not admit to the table the smaller competitors – sparrows and tits. For these birds, it is better to make the feeder smaller to make it hard for larger individuals to reach the feed.
Material
When the help of a person is vital to birds, the aesthetic qualities of the feeders are of little value. But we also want that good deeds would please to our eyes. Therefore, we recommend to replace the homemade bird feeders from milk cartons and polluting plastic bottles with durable and beautiful wood products. A decorative bird feeder will adorn a park, and you will be able to observe birds eating.
There is another reason to buy a wooden bird feeder – they are heavier than plastic items, and therefore, there will be less shaking in the wind.
Where to place
If you already have a wooden feeder for the birds, you need to care about the safety of your wards. The feeder should not be available for cats that can hunt careless birds.
You should find a place where birds will feel comfortable: it can be a garden, park or square, most importantly – away from the roads.
It is vital to ensure that the feeder would be securely fastened, and if it is suspended to a branch, it should be a strong and thick branch.
Only winter. Even help should be limited
It would seem – why not to feed birds all the time, that's not that hard? But we should not prevent natural instincts. It is best to accustom the birds to a certain schedule, pouring the feed once a day. Birds adapted to find food. The difficulties they have are only in winter, and at other times of the year, birds are quite able to survive on their own.
Untimely feeding can prevent baby birds to learn how to forage, and migratory birds reconsider to fly South. A striking example of this is ducks and swans that often spend the winter where people abundantly feed them.
