Birds are good neighbours for people: they are a pleasure to watch, they delight the ears and kill annoying insects. Unfortunately, not all birds can live comfortably in modern cities. Therefore, the birdhouses are so necessary to birds, living in our gardens: small wooden houses serve as a second nest for hatching.
Wooden birdhouses
Of course, there are birds for which the city has become a familiar environment: for example, pigeons, sparrows, and crows have excellently adapted to the urban environment. But tits, starlings, nuthatches, pied flycatchers are increasingly being forced out of the densely built-up streets. But exactly these birds have the most melodious singing and also actively catch insects during the breeding season.
The birds need help not only in the "concrete jungle" but also in young stands: gardens, parks, and forests. Thin and low trees are not yet able to become a full house for a bird family, because trunks with hollows are necessary for a nest, and therefore, the birdhouse needs to be purchased and installed without waiting until they grow up. In addition, the presence of insect-eating birds will have a positive impact on the health of the trees themselves.
Decorative birdhouses
When choosing birdhouses you should think not about the aesthetic aspect as much as about the convenience of a bird family. Decorative birdhouse will beautify the area but if birds will share your taste depends on a number of characteristics:
- the size of the booth;
- opening diameter;
- the material of manufacture;
- the colour of the house.
Bigger does not always mean better, and small birds don't need a huge mansion. A house with the height of about 25 cm will be suitable for tits, the height of the "ceiling" of 30 cm will be sufficient for starlings.
The entrance should not be big either. The diameter of it can be 2,5 cm for tiny blue tits, 3 cm for tits, not more than 6 cm for starlings. The bigger the opening is, the more opportunities the birds' enemies- for example, cats, squirrels, weasels- have to break into their nest (these predatory animals thrive in the forest area on the outskirts of cities).
The entrance should be placed at the height of about 20 cm from the bottom of the house to protect baby birds. As a rule, such a detail as a perch is not necessary for birds at all: they "land" successfully right on the edge of the opening.
All kinds of birds prefer wooden birdhouses, but you need to remember a few rules. The best "building material" for a birdhouse will be boards but you should not be zealous in processing them: the inside walls should be rough so that birds can easily climb them all the way to the entrance.
If you decide to buy a birdhouse in Ukraine- remember that because of periodic wet weather the outer surface should be covered with waterproof substance: this way the house will last for more than one generation of birds.
When choosing a wooden birdhouse, it is better to buy the colour which matches the surroundings. Too bright colours can scare off potential residents. The best variants are low-key natural colours or the decoration with natural bark and branches.
Birdhouse – to buy
If you want to buy a birdhouse in the online shop, consider its location carefully. First of all, there should be an appropriate height. You should fix a house for tits on a tree at the height of 4m and for starlings- 5-6 m in noisy places (near dwelling area, in public parks and squares). In quiet places, birds can settle on the height of 2 m, but make sure that they are not at risk of being attacked by a cat.
Wooden birdhouse should be hung so that its facade was slightly tilted forward. It is also important to choose the right direction for the entrance: it is preferable to turn it to the south-east or east.
